Defeat Shows Some Good Signs. Thursday 9th February 2012

Thursday's 20-4 defeat at the hands of last season's clean sweep winners provided more optimism than the scoreline may indicate, in a game that Matlock competed in for the first two quarters.

Southwell played host to a Matlock side that was taking part in its fifth friendly since the league season ended last October. Going two goals up in the first session, the Derbyshire side looked tight and comfortable against a unit that is proving to be virtually unbeatable at this level. Although Matlock did fall further behind in the second period, the defending at times was solid and included some good blocking from man down situations. "We need more work on the man down, but did show at times that we are getting there. In the last half of the game however, we lost our shape and it showed," commented assistant coach Andy Massey afterwards. Matlock complete their friendly match programme at Nottingham University this Tuesday.

Meanwhile, new signings Paul Cruise and Brian Carter are continuing their conditioning programme ready for polo specific training. Paul, who does not look unlike filmstar Tom of the same name but is considerably younger and taller, was refused a signing on fee after shouting "show me the money" several times during the transfer negotiations. All parties eventually settled for a pint of Amstel and a bowl of peanuts. New players are always welcome. Please text the MWPC hotline on 07925874422 if you are interested.
